Hey parents, let’s get our girls excited about math! Enroll your daughter in Orlando Math Circle’s Three Day Workshop, where she will engage in fun, enriching activities to challenge her mathematical mind to solve problems creatively. Of course, boys are welcome too.
The Why
School math lessons can only give our students so much. Beyond the classroom, students need time to explore, to be creative and play with math in an environment where measures of ‘productivity’ do not lie in the right answer, but in the process of getting there with expectations for fun discovery.
That’s why the Orlando Math Circle is excited about logic problems and fun math discoveries for middle school students at Ruth Estabrook’s upcoming three day workshop. This afterschool workshop allows students to discover problem solving skills in a low-pressure, high fun environment. While this program is open to all students, we’re encouraging more girls to come out for this enrichment workshop to fight the gender gap in STEM programs. Come on, ladies!
Ruth currently works as a senior math editor for a textbook company, but she still finds time to help with the Orlando Math Circle’s online problem solving classes, giving students a chance to enjoy her wonderful knack for making even hairy problems come into focus and make sense. We’re very much looking forward to having her here in person for three days of hands-on workshops for middle school students. The workshop will be held on March 21, 22, and 23 from 3:45pm-6:30pm — save the date!
The Workshop
This workshop will be an exciting mix of problem solving, puzzles, math/art connections and mathematics games. It will help develop and strengthen students’ capabilities in mental math, word problems, number sense, spatial sense and pattern recognition. The program will include geometry-driven crafts, friendly competition questions and a two-day tessellation project. This will be an engaging learning experience for students that won’t feel like extra hours in math class.
. Problem solving and math activities will be taken from various sources, such as MSRI Math Circles Library books, Math Olympiad Training,American Math Competitions, and other curriculum bookswill be used. All these tools will help students develop valuable mathematical thinking skills that will benefit them in school math, standardized tests, and many other aspects of life. Most importantly, this workshop will instill an excitement for math in our kids.
